I was shooting video at a fishing derby when one of the judges ran over to me and said, “You’re got to see this one! I know you’ll want a shot of this!” So I followed him and what I saw did surprise me.
A young man caught a 24-inch catfish, and not just any catfish, but an albino one. I was impressed. I’d seen them in books, but had never seen one close up. The fish got me thinking about a book I read years ago titled, The Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable. The book details how to be unique and stand out from the competition. As business owners, we should always be thinking in this mindset. The albino catfish is definitely unique. You can instantly tell how it’s different. Your website is your chance to showcase how you're different from your competition. Sure the look of your website will make you look different, but its the content on your pages that really matters. A video on your landing page is a great way to bring viewers in and get them to know you quickly. This video tells your story, why your business is different than your competition, why they should do business with you and what makes your company unique. This shouldn’t be a promo or a sales pitch. This should be your story, an intimate conversation with your audience. Albino catfish might not be as rare as they were and someone might have stocked the pond, but it still is unique. A young man catching an albino catfish is more likely to make the local newspaper than say an ordinary looking one of the same size. It’s important now more than ever to stand out.
